Many years ago, people even didn’t know about the concept of bullying. Nowadays, some people might think that bullying just exists in school between teenagers. But the reality is that bullying could happen in any place when someone is a victim of verbal and psychological abuse. It’s important to know that bullying is defined as “a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort.” Workplaces and school are the most common places where this takes place. But we can’t forget that we are living in a world where technology has a very important role in our society.
Technology is the main tool that human beings use to communicate with each other and it is increasingly present in our lives. However, social networks have been the main place to commit cyberbullying against people; Facebook and Tumblr are the most popular ones for these horrible actions. People can use your personal information in ways that you might not necessarily be aware of, and privacy policies are being questioned by many users when their personal information or pictures are stolen from their profiles. Personally, my privacy setting on Facebook says that only friends can see my information; but somehow, random people have access to my photo albums and other personal information. Restricting access to family and close friends is one of the alternatives that I am considering after realizing this.
In the last year, there have been several reports of people being victims of cyberbullying; for example, other people create fake profiles of them online and say that they are HIV positive when they are not. My best advice to everybody would be to be careful about what you post online, and to not send compromising pictures to people that you don’t know. Also, if you realize that someone has created a fake profile of other people you know, I recommend reporting it immediately.
